How to prepare for the first appointment
An experienced family lawyer wants understand your case in detail to provide the best legal advice tailored to your situation. Help your lawyer to help you, by having as much information available as possible, and you can even send a short email before the first free appointment. Any information you do not know can be followed up later.
At the first free appointment, your lawyer will ask you questions about:
Your relationship: the date of cohabitation, date of marriage (if applicable) and date your relationship ended on a final basis.
Details about you and your former partner: your names, addresses, dates of birth.
A list of all assets, liabilities and financial resources, and their current values and balances.
The assets and liabilities at the date of cohabitation, and what happened to them, the date on which assets were sold and how the sale proceeds were applied, or the date on which liabilities were discharged and the source of funds used to discharge them.
The dates on which you or your former partner received any lump sums of money, or other assets, and how they were applied. This includes gift, loans, inheritances, and compensation payments.
The details of the current and past employment of you and your former partner, including your respective incomes.
Any major health issues of you, your former partner or any children of the relationship.
The past and current care arrangements for any children, and whether any changes to those arrangements are proposed or likely.
